Help us get 35 Laptops for Haitian Teachers

Just a 90-minute flight from the US, Haiti, with a population of 9-million, is one of the poorest countries in the world. Nearly 50% of their school age children never attend school, and those who do, receive a dismal education.

A couple of weeks ago a few of us got together and decided to get behind the folks at Beyond Borders and help by raising money to buy 35 laptops required for teachers in Haiti. We established haitiEDU as a blog to start informing people about what we were thinking. We have since decided to use this blog and title as it is simpler to remember and communicates more effectively what we are doing.

Donations have started to come in on our donation page and we are going to put a focused effort on solving this problem. We need your help. We want friends in different cities to help this effort by spreading the word and putting on small events that can raise the additional funds. One foundation has expressed interest by committing to match the first $5,000 raised. We hope to get some additional foundations and sponsors to contribute to the effort.

Claire Dowds and Judith Dowds are going to visit Haiti early April to meet the people and inform us more about the wider context. Please connect with them directly and share your thoughts and ideas on how else we can approach and succeed with our goals.
